I have an old house with small doorways and narrow halls. How do I find a sofa and loveseat to fit? - small sofas

I just returned from a sofa and love seat to my local furniture store because the delivery men could not take to the family room. The store says it has no furniture small enough to fit in to close my doors. It is advisable to get a futon, but it's not really my style. I want something more formal. Suggestions?
